Last week was of all kinds of weather conditions on the mountains in Greece. Rainy, snowy and hail clouds passed by as temperature was going from cold to warm and from warm to cold. In these situations it ’s better to give the maximum respect to the mountain and to be really careful about what we choose to ride. An avalanche or icy terrain that could confuse us with slashy rideable snow could ruin our day and put us in danger.
That day, on the way to Liakoura Peak (highest peak of Mount Parnassus – 2456m), we saw all kind of snow qualities. Icy, fresh, slashy, crusty and even some lighter snow could be found in the same area. We passed by Lakes valley and headed towards the top of the peak. On the way up we met some “tricky” terrain. There was fresh snow with an icy layer underneath. We decided to traverse carefully a small part of the slope and hike up from the ridge.
On the other side some parts of Liakoura’s couloir were icy and we had to change our route towards a smooth mellow slope in the West.
It was the right decision we had taken. The nicest ride of the day with the best quality of snow we could get. Everything run safe and smooth!
